Where Did the Historical Information Come From?
This historical account traces the development of the Palace Green area over the last two centuries, with particular reference to the Palace Green Pavilion and its grounds which are close to the Main Guard. In the 18th century the Palace Green area would have been dominated by the Governor’s House (on the eastern side) with its ancillary buildings and associated military activity. The Governor’s House was built in 1719 but ceased to be used as a military residence in 1833.
The early history of the Palace Green Pavilion is still being researched but it is believed that the original central building dates from around 1830. It was extended three times, the latest extension being in 1953. There were also plans for other changes, which did not materialise.
It is still not known as to when or why the building became known as the Palace Green Pavilion.
Over the years the Pavilion provided a Subscription Reading Room (Stage 1), a Billiard Hall (Stage 2), a Smoking Room (Stage 3) and a Bowling Green for the citizens of Berwick. These activities ended in 1914 due to declining interest and the premises were then leased to the Boy Scouts who extended the Main Hall (Stage 4).
The freehold of the premises was sold to the Scout Association in 1945 and the Pavilion, or Scout Hall as it is known locally, is still used by 5th Berwick (Holy Trinity) Scouts as their headquarters.
